Based on true story.

Michael David Weiss (Chris Evans), a madman, genius, playboy, friend, fool, junkie, brilliant lawyer. He with his partner, Paul Danziger (Mark Kassen), take a case on health supply corporation after a nurse, Vicky Rogers (Vinessa Shaw), seeks them out. She was injured by a needle she intended to shoot on a violent patient, and unfortunately, it was contaminated with HIV. Therefore she has to struggle with AIDS until her death. The first time they meet up, she introduce a safety needle her engineer friend, Jeffrey Matthew Dancort (Marshall Bell), the owner of Safety Point Company, invented but no hospital except for one and only San Antonio Memorial uses it. This is caused by the monopoly system of United Medical Group so then he can’t sell any of his needles to other hospital.

Mike and Paul try to make the safety needle into every hospital, because based on the numbers, many death on hospital are caused by the infected plastic needles that can’t be sterilized but still be reused. Under the influence of cocaine, Mike defends his client on court, but their opponents try to bribe them with some money under they cornered situation, but Mike refuses to give up. But before he can finish his job, he got overdosed by drugs. So then Paul continues his job, and they made it. Now, in 2004, every hospital in US use the safety needles. But in poor countries, plastic needles still used, and there the illness still spreading all over the world.

Sometimes, the brightest light comes from the darkest side.

What interesting in this movie is, a drug-addicted brilliant lawyer, who doesn’t really care about his own body, fights for other human’s lives. He has seen, his client, suffered from AIDS, because the health supply company refuses to produce safety needles for they won’t afford it. And in a year, 800,000 people die after the same accident, infected by contaminated needles. He finds that this thing can save million people. And he knows this is the thing worth fighting for.

Sometimes, people who mess up with his/her own life, is the one who would care of another chance for other people. I don’t know, maybe it’s something they regret of their own life, or just beneath their heart, there is willing to do something good for other people. Usually, we’re so easily judging someone by what his/her appearance. Just because they’re messes, doesn’t mean they’re useless. I mean, look at these people in this movie, dressing so neat like a rich guys, speaking of how they care for their people (I refer this to the senator in this movie), but refuse to give a chance for other people to live in safety. While this junkie lawyer, giving up all the chances to be rich and fighting for this case until his death. I just feel so grateful there are still some people like this. Salute! There’s still a hope in humanity. 🙂
